Books for Africa

The "Books for Africa" is a program, administered by the Africa Centre,  that responds to the material needs of rural schools in countries such as Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Zimbabwe. "Books for Africa" sources, transports and distributes quality textbooks and reading material to schools and rural libraries.

Some of the beneficiaries of the "Books for Africa" program include:

Kenya - Laikipia School District

While education is mandatory in Kenya for all children under the age of 15, government funds have not been allocated to cover the material needs to support this initiative. In a country where students are eager to learn and expand their horizons, books are a rare commodity. The Laikipia School district had a special request of science and math books. Books that specifically could not be found in Kenya. In response, students form Dawson School in Colorado collected over 6000 textbooks were shipped to Kenya and delivered to schools in July 2004.

Ghana -Cape Coast Children’s Library

Funds are needed to provide books to this library in Cape Coast, Ghana. The library provides educational resources to over 1000 children ranging from first grade through high school. The people of Cape Coast are setting an example for the rest of the country by taking great pride in providing education. They recognize education as an investment in helping future generations and the nation break out of its circle of poverty.

Ugandan Schools Program

This program emphasizes the importance of reading as a way to help the Ugandan children not only to develop important reading skills, but also to transcend their difficult existence, explore their imaginations, and begin to look at the world as a place of possibility and potential. Because effectiveness and sustainability are important, the program has developed and will monitor a test program before expanding. This program only provides books to select schools that have a three-year program in place to train teachers in how to teach reading and to develop reading skills.
